Look forward to more of this. Hope MAL is wrong with the 11 episodes thing. otherwise i'll have to pick up the manga.

Yeah. I decided i wouldn't watch any manga adaptions and just read the manga, but i figured that since it is finished before airing it will be a complete adaption. Somehow 5 a episode is too much; most only manage to get 3 in.

Loved it though, i was in a bad mood and this cheered me up despite being rather depressing at the same time.

Some people said it will only consist of Part 1's scenario, which would be perfectly fine by many, honestly. The second half of the story is not particular popular by the one's who have read the manga, and most say it should have ended at part 1.

To put it into perspective, Episode 1 consisted only of chapter 1. So I'd have to wonder how they'd be able to pull off 55 chapters in 11 episodes. The 24 chapters for Part 1 is much easier to pull off with that number of episodes, since some chapters aren't stand alone anyway.

So yes, that aside, I did really enjoy this first episode. It reminded exactly why I fell in love with this series when I first read the manga. What annoyed me, as you might have guessed, was the way they subtly manipulated our feelings toward Rin by changing and adding event's from the original narrative, just so the viewers can get a better impression of her from the get-go.

For starters, we're technically not supposed to find her cute at all until the scene with the grandfather's coffin and the bellflowers.

In the original, the narrative emphasized more on her social awkwardness than her cuteness prior to that event. Reina originally served as a comparison device for how a normal child should act, giving us a (temporary) impression that Rin's social development is stunted. They've changing it by overplaying Reina's childish traits to eleven, thus turning her into a bratty foil for Rin's calm demeanor, which was not the author's intent in the manga.

I can see why they had do it, but that is still something an adaptation shouldn't do lightly.

Didn't read the manga, but I understand what you mean.
Just wanted to compliment you, great critic :)

After watching this I wanna read the manga ASAP.
Its the best anime of the summer already when it comes to first eps.
First the art style is beautiful, it doesn't get any cleaner than that.
Rin is so Kawaii :D
The story is touching and strong at the same time.

If that's the case, you weren't one of the ones I was referring to, which is a given since this seems to be your first post in this thread. I'm referring to a few of the people who already posted here.

It's one thing to be annoyed, because for this one particular event she's made to be so (even more so in the original manga, where her only problem is her volume control; all that other stuff like taking credit for the band ladder was added in for this adaptation). However, to have such vitriol for a character to the point of openly admitting of wanting her to be in the coffin with the grandfather and/or to inflict physical harm...yeah. You can argue that, yes, she's just a character, but even if that were the case, saying that out loud gives a really nasty impression.

Man, you're good.

About the manipulative script to force us sympathize with Rin, well, I agree in terms.
I think that manga is also manipulative in some ways, like you describe, and instead of think tha i was manipulated, i prefer think that anime care of show us more of what Rin really is.
In the manga, Daikichi verbalize what he think about what his relatives say about Rin. The anime not, simples show us how he is upset. The way how Daikichi call Rin within deeps of her heart e ask if she want live together was beatiful.

What is that Rin and Daikichi seen one another? This is what the anime concerned about.
We can see how Rin notice that Daikichi is similar with gramps, the lines in his mouth, and Daikichi on his side, see what the another don't care of see, don't caro of "observe" porperly. He see Rin is a normal girl, neglected.

After seed the second episode, the scrip really seems to concentrated in show the little details.

Had a feeling this would be great, the manga has always interested me, but I haven't started it yet. And just by the looks of the opening scene, I can already see this is gonna be fantastic....

Wow, that was wonderful! Rin has got to be the cutest little girl ever!
And, I love light-hearted shows like this!

This will probably end up being my favorite show this season, if not the whole year.
The only problem is now i wanna read the manga!!! :/

Well, the main character is officially a better person than I am. I would've said the brat could go fuck herself, but that's why I'm a terrible person and Daikichi is not. I will give this show a chance because it's remarkably well done, but so far nothing has particularly caught my interest.

Was anyone else wishing that little brat Reina was in the coffin with the grandpa?

You're not alone in wishing that. Reina was just... incredibly annoying. The entire episode.

But I did love the episode! Daikichi (interesting name; isn't that "best luck"/"big luck"/"great blessing" that you can get written on omikuji fortune slips?) and Rin, their personalities, and their interactions more than made up for the little annoyance in the form of Reina.

This looks like it will be good... I like the simplistic but "soft" sort of art style and colouring. :) Great atmosphere going on here.

The show definitely looks promising from the first episode, can't wait to see how Daikichi and Rin will together. Got a potential of 10/10 show, but we will see.

Also, great artwork, I love this simple style and the atmosphere.

I'm just utterly speechless; amazing show :) It's so warm and tender.. I love it.

1,000/10 :)

Just to say, I cried so hard in this episode. I don't know why, it wasn't even that sad. I just feel like I've known these characters for so long, rather than 20 minutes. I'm SO happy with this anime. There's nothing else I can say.
